Purpose Has No Age Limit: Jeffrey’s Second Chance at 81
At 81 years old, Jeffrey wasn’t looking to slow down. He was looking for his next opportunity to make a difference.
Jeffrey had completed Peer Specialist training, preparing himself for work that would allow him to use his experience to support others. He had put in the work. He had the training. And he was ready to contribute.
But like so many job seekers who come through Second Chance Society, Jeffrey discovered that being ready to work and being able to start work are not always the same thing.
Two practical barriers still stood between him and employment: the cost of appropriate work clothing and the fingerprinting required for his background check.
Second Chance Society covered both.
With those barriers removed, Jeffrey could move forward with the opportunity he had already worked to earn.
Today, Jeffrey is employed as an Outreach Representative with Prodigy House, beginning a new professional chapter at an age when many people assume someone’s working years are behind them.
Jeffrey’s story illustrates why Second Chance Society’s work extends beyond traditional job readiness. Sometimes a person has the skills. They’ve completed the training. They’re motivated, qualified and ready to work—but one practical barrier can still stand between them and a paycheck.
A pair of work clothes. A state ID. Transportation. A birth certificate. A background check.
Individually, these needs may seem small. For someone preparing to begin a job, they can determine whether an opportunity becomes employment.
That is where a hand up can make all the difference.
At Second Chance Society, we believe economic mobility should not have an age limit. The people we serve span generations, each with something meaningful to contribute when barriers are removed and opportunity is within reach.
Jeffrey’s journey reminds us that a second chance doesn’t always mean starting over.
Sometimes, it simply means having what you need to take the next step.
And at 81, Jeffrey was ready for his.
