A Second Chance in Action

Joshua’s life journey has been marked by significant challenges, but his resilience and determination to rebuild are inspiring. After experiencing a period of housing instability, he faced a series of hardships that ultimately led to substance use, legal involvement, and incarceration.

Despite these obstacles, Joshua refused to give up on himself. He recognized that change was necessary and began taking meaningful steps toward rebuilding his life. In 2025, he entered a supportive housing program that provided the stability and resources he needed to move forward. He also voluntarily entered treatment and has since maintained six months of sobriety through dedication, hard work, and a commitment to personal growth.

Joshua’s determination extended beyond recovery. Drawing on his previous work experience and strong customer service skills, he actively pursued employment opportunities. His perseverance paid off when he secured a position as a pier agent at a local port, creating a pathway toward long-term financial stability and independence.

Like many employment opportunities, this position required specific credentials and work-related expenses before he could begin. To start his new role, Joshua needed a Transportation Worker Identification Credential (TWIC) card and appropriate work attire. Without these resources, his employment would have been delayed.

Recognizing the significance of this opportunity, Second Chance Society stepped in to remove this barrier by funding the cost of his TWIC card. This assistance ensured that Joshua could move forward with employment and continue building momentum toward his goals.

His journey serves as a powerful reminder that when barriers are removed and individuals are given the opportunity to succeed, meaningful and lasting change is possible.
